Sight Seeing

The Beaches

Chaweng Beach
This is the most popular beach in Samui and its shores are about seven kilometers long.   It is lined by shopping and entertainment places and some of the best resort and hotels on the island including the Amari Palm Reef Resort.   The sea in front of the resort is shallow and has not strong currents making it perfect for little ones to swim.

Lamai Beach
This beach is about four kilometers long and stretches to the eastern coast.   In addition, other beaches include Maenam, Bophut, Big Buddha, Choegmon, Lipa Noi and Taling Ngam.   These beaches have fewer people visiting them but also lack the facilities available in Chaweng.

Things to See

Wat PharYai (Big Buddha Temple)
This temple has a 12 meter high golden Buddha image which stands on the beach and is Samui's most famous landmark.   Most visitors at some point during their holidays go to marvel at the sheer size and beauty of this remarkable statue.

Wat Sumret Temple
This old temple is the guardian of the ancient White Marble Buddha, believed by many, including the resident monk, to be many hundreds of years old.   It is also harbours within its grounds the secret hall of Buddhas. This building houses a fine collection of revered and valuable Buddha images.   They are so valuable that the temple has recently suffered a spate of thefts and so the door now remains locked.   A monk will open the hall for you upon request.

Hin-Ta & Hin-Yai
One of the most photographed places in all of Koh Samui!   A folk tale tells of an old couple whose ship was wrecked in the bay.   Their bodies were washed ashore and grew into those big rocks shaped like human genitals.   Quite amusing and you can buy a postcard to send back home!

Monkey Show
Features small monkeys trained to harvest coconut and perform various tricks on stage. Showtime 10:00, 14:00 & 16:00 everyday.   Tickets are Bht. 250.

Discover Nathorn Town
Take a ride to the old part of Samui, where you can find many things to buy.   There are also interesting restaurants and a beautiful pier in front of the town.

Natural Beauty

Angthong Marine National Park
This comprises some 40 islands and is about 2 hours by boat northwest of Koh Samui. The islands rise from the sea in limestone cliffs and there are a number of small peaceful bays and tiny coves.    You can also find numerous small beaches.   The biggest attraction here is the emerald saltwater lake called Talay Noi on Koh Mae Ko.   The lake is in the middle of the island and requires quite a strenuous climb so could not be done with small children.   The park is also perfect for snorkeling.

Ko Phangan
Almost as big as Samui, this island is located half an hours boat ride away.   Here visitors can absorb the charm of nature.    It is far less developed than Samui with tracks criss crossing the island and linking a few beaches.   The island can be reached by daily ferry boats from Nathon Pier or Big Buddha Pier.

Ko Tao & Ko Nang Yuan
About 2 hours by speed boat from Koh Samui.   The sea around this island is excellent for diving and snorkeling because of its wide variety of coral formations and a large quantity of marine fauna.

Na Mung Water Fall
The waterfall is located approximately 1/2 away between Lamai beach and Nathon just off the island ring road.   It consists of 2 waterfalls, the smallest one has a fall of 18m and is accessible by car or motorbike.   The larger fall with a drop of 80m demands a 20 minute hike up into the near by mountains but it is well worth the journey.   During the monsoon this is a spectacular attraction to visit.
