Getting About in Bangkok
Public Buses
The public bus transportation is crowded
and frankly quite confusing. However, there are always buses leading
to the main tourist spots; it's just a matter of finding out
which one! If you have the time taking a bus can be a lot of fun;
it's a cheap way to see the city and whilst you might not end up where you
thought you were going, you will certainly have an adventure on the
way.

Waterbuses
Click
here for map of the water bus route.
The waterbuses use the klong (river) network. Whilst it is
quicker than travelling by road during peak hours, it is also extremely
dangerous. When a boat comes into the station it pauses at the
station for a literally 30 seconds. When it is busy, there are
crowds of people waiting and a surge of people will push you forward
almost taking you off your feet. You have to climb under an
awning and over people already sitting on the boat, to find a seat.
The boat leaves when it's ready not when you are ready so unless you are
quick you will find yourself hanging precariously onto the side of the
boat as it heads down the river. Quite frequently you see
stray shoes floating around in the water and I have actually seen people
go in as well (getting out is a nightmare as the concrete sides to the
waterway at the station are covered in barnacles). Getting off
the boat isn't much better either; you have to walk along the side of the
boat (which is several inches thick only) holding onto the awning for
support. When the boat is pulls into the station, you have to
jump clear of the boat as fast as possible before it pulls away leaving
you half on and half off.
If I haven't managed to put you off, then Pratunam
station is opposite the Amari Watergate Hotel. It is probably
better to only consider using this mode of transport outside peak hours
(when it is less crowded) or if you have a life or death appointment
somewhere.
Skytrain
The Bangkok Skytrain is only a couple of years old and has completely
changed the way you can travel around the city. In a matter of
15 minutes, you can get from the heart of Sukhumvit to the
river. Travelling on the skytain ensures that you'll never
waste precious time stuck in the traffic. Click here for a map
of the skytrain.

Tuk-tuk
Bangkok's most famous mode of transport, "tuk tuks", are
the three-wheeled open-air vehicles you see cruising the streets
of Bangkok. Tuk-tuks offer an interesting way of seeing the
city, but are best for shorter trips during off-peak hours; you don't want to
be sitting in a traffic jam in a tuk tuk in peak hours breathing in the
exhaust fumes of the surrounding traffic.
You must agree the fare before proceeding and theoretically it should
cost less than the price of a comparable journey by metered
taxi. If a tuk tuk driver offers you a very cheap fare, the
chances are he is trying to take you on a guided tour of tailors and gem
shops for which he will receive a commission. Beware, the
prices at such stores are often inflated and they sell an inferior quality
of goods.
Remember, in the rainy season, riding in a tuk-tuk can be dangerous as
well as rather soggy- often the tyres have very little tread on them and
on the slippery roads sometimes turn over if the driver takes a corner too
sharply.
Metered Taxis
These are all over the place in
Bangkok. Make sure the driver turns on the meter when you set
off, especially if you are starting from the airport. Try to
have plenty of small notes and loose change handy as despite driving round collecting small change all day, taxi drivers seldom
have any themselves. The minimum fare for a metered taxi is 35 Baht for
the first two km. For destinations out of Bangkok, the fare has
to be agreed upon beforehand. There are no limits to the
number of passengers or surcharges for luggage. If you ride
on the expressways you will be expected to pay the tolls. If
you get a metered taxi from the taxi queue at the airport
you must pay a 50 baht surcharge. This is paid to the
driver.
The Airport Bus
This bus service runs between Don Muang Airport and downtown
destinations. The routes to hotels are as follows:
Route AB1: Don Muang-Silom With stops at Dindaeng Road, Ratchaprarop
Road, Pratunam, Ratchaprasong, Lumpini Park, Silom Road, Surawong Road and
Charoen Krung Road.
Route AB4: Don Muang-Hua Lampong With stops at Ploenchit Road, Siam
Square, Samyan and Bangkok Railway Station (Hua Lampong).
Services operate from 5.00 a.m. to 11.00 p.m. with a flat rate of 70
baht. For more information, contact operation control +66 2
995 1252 to 4.
The Hotel Limo Service
This is a convenient way to getting around
Bangkok. Our limo service goes to just about anywhere you
wish. Prices depend on where you wish to go and if you want a return
trip or for the whole day. It's based on an hourly rate with a
minimum of 2 hours and must stay within the Bangkok
area. |
