Things to Do in Samui

Should you ever get tired of the gold sands and crystal clear water - here are a few suggestions of other things that you can do:

Idea

Buy a pack of blank postcards from the post office before you leave for Thailand and take some felt tip pens (crayons will melt in the sun). Instead of getting your child to buy a postcard and write it, set aside some time to draw a memory from the holiday on one side and then mail it to special people back home, like grandma and grandpa.

The Beaches

Chaweng Beach
This is the most popular beach in Samui and its shores are about seven kilometers long. It is lined by shopping and entertainment places and some of the best resorts on the island including the Amari Palm Reef Resort. The sea in front of the resort is shallow and does not have strong currents making it perfect for little ones to swim.

Lamai Beach
The beach is about four kilometers long and stretches to the eastern coast. In addition, other beaches include Maenam, Bophut, Big Buddha, Choegmon, Lipa Noi and Taling Ngam. These beaches have fewer people visiting them but also lack the facilities available in Chaweng.

Activities

Buffalo Show
A pair of male water buffaloes are pitted against each in a fairly harmless head wrestling contest. There is one stadium in Chaweng and several others around the Island. Showtime 10:00 and 15:00 everyday.

Butterfly Garden
The butterflies flit about naturally amid tropical foliage, but they can’t completely escape from view. Located opposite the Central Samui Village Resort and open daily form 09:00 to 18:00.

Crocodile Farm
If you are into sharp-toothed reptiles, head over to Samui crocodile farm. The farm is open daily from 08.30 to 17.00 and there are shows at 14.00 and 16.30. Tickets are Baht 250.

Elephant Trekking

Enjoy an elephant ride through a tropical rainforest. Standard trips last for half an hour, although longer trips can be requested.

Monkey Show
Features small monkeys trained to harvest coconut and perform various tricks.  Showtime 10:00, 14:00 & 16:00 everyday. Tickets are Bht. 250.

Samui Aquarium
Thailand’s only privately owned aquarium featuring an excellent collection of tropical marine life. Open daily from 09:00 to 18:00.

Snake Farm
This farm in Talingngam has ten species of snakes as well as centipedes, scorpions and lizards. There is a special show with scorpions, centipedes and a cobra at 10:00 and 14:00. Open daily.

Wat Phar Yai (Big Buddha Temple)
Big Buddha is the 12-meter high golden Buddha image on Big Buddha beach. This temple is Samui’s most famous landmark.

Bowling

The Living Bowl Center offers top of the range ten pin action and its own on-site restaurant, if you can’t tear yourself away from the lanes for long.  Bowling is a great activity for a wet afternoon.
