White Water Rafting

The rainy season, from mid-May to mid-October used to be regarded as the low season for tourism in Thailand. However, for rafting, this is the best time of year to come as the rainfall is at its highest. It used to only be bamboo rafting which was available in Thailand. Floating at along at a leisurely pace, this was a great way to see the natural environment surrounding the river. Recently adventure rafting became available using rubber dinghies and experiencing the rapids on the wild rivers.

The North

The north is probably the region where rafting originated in Thailand and has more rivers suitable for rafting than anywhere else. There are many places where you can white water raft in Thailand, below just gives you a taster.

Pai River

This adventure will take you through the main Wildlife Sanctuary of Mae Hong Son province. Beside experiencing the thrill of the rapids, you will have the chance to watch monkeys and birds playing along the riverside, shower in sparkling waterfalls, plus discover the fun of "body rafting", floating along with the current. Trip starts on the Khong River, a tributary of the Pai, where it passes beneath highway 1095, about 45 kilometers northeast of Mae Hong Son.

The Mae Klong River

The Nam Mae Klong river flows through enchanting wilderness in the Umphang district of Mae-Sot province. The rapids are small on the first part of the river which can be rafted as a day trip from Umphang. The lower part of the river, is a real expedition taking 4 days and including a hard trek with elephant support for equipment.

The Nam Wah River

The Nam Wah river flows through Mae Charin National Park in Nan Province and expeditions can be organised from Chiang Mai.
